Bob Firman - Team Listing (Click here for parent information sheet)

Team,

I was able to get the Provo coach on the phone tonight to get enough of the results to make a decision on who will be going to Bob Firman. Once I get the official results emailed to me (hopefully tonight or in the morning) I will post them.

Making a decision as to who runs and who does not, and who goes and who does not is difficult especially as there are a few of you that over the past few weeks have been very close. But, with all things I had to make a decision.

There is a race (Orem Kiwanis Invite) that will be next Saturday that I would like all of those that are not going to Boise to race at. We will discuss this in practice this week.

Also, I do have an alternate for the Boys and Girls team to go to Boise if someone on the list cannot go. So I need to know ASAP (Text, email, call, etc.)if you are going to be able to go or not. Either way I need to know!!

Some quick facts:

Depart: Friday 24th @ 8:00 AM

Traveling to: Boise Idaho

Staying at: Comfort Suites (Meridian Idaho)

Racing on: Saturday the 25th
Returning: Saturday the 25th at approx 10:00 PM

Cost of Trip: $50.00 per athlete (if there is a money issue please call me, we can work something
out.)

All of the information for the trip can be found on the parent information sheet saved as a link on the website (I will have copies for everyone Monday at Practice)

Here is the List:

Murray Team Results

Team,
The Varsity Girls team finished 13th Friday out of nearly 40 teams from around Utah (and a couple from Wyoming and Colorado) Summer was our top finisher in 5th Place. All of the girls raced well, giving props to Candace who continues to close the gap between her and summer ( this week was her closest finish only 59 seconds back). Sisters Jordyn and Rachel finished as our 3rd and 4th girls with Rachel earning her Varsity spot back... Angela and Kate continue to be consistent and Montana fell a little short but had a good recovery to finish as our # 7 varsity girl.
On the boys side, we finished 4th out of nearly 50 teams. Taylor finished as our #1 runner. He was in the top 20 (19th Place). Chance and Garrett continue to close the gap between them and Taylor. Kyle, Austin, and Joseph finished together, giving us a 59 second top 5 gap. Our top 6 boys all finished in the top 100 boys and ran very impressive times. Cooper ran his best race of the season to earn a Varsity position for next weeks race. We continue to change out our #7 runner every week. I am really looking to see who is going to step up, close the gap to our first 6, and maintain that position?
I have been thinking a lot about what may or may not be missing on our team. I continue to go back to a quote we used last year during track:
"The Will to win means nothing without the will to prepare".
I believe that most of our team has the will to win, but I am not sure we are at the point where our dedication is where it needs to be. This last week alone, we had a lot of our team skipping practice for various things. We have people coming late to practice, then leaving late and not helping their teammates on runs. We have those that are leaving early and not completing their workouts. I continue to sense an "I" attitude vs a "WE" attitude and we will never achieve what we want to as a team until we change this mentality. There are those of you who are trying and I appreciate it.
We are going to continue to perform very well as a team. But until we can step to the line of a race, and look each other in the eye, and know that as a team we worked hard, pushed each other, encourage each other, and believe in each other to the best of our ability. We will not rise up to our individual and team"potential".
I have a great deal of confidence in each one of you! I believe that we have the talent on this team to rise above and race at a very high level and be a team that others look to as an example.
I want all of you to take pride in being a member of the OHS Cross Country team.
I want all of you to determine what type of legacy you want to leave behind. I want all of you to rise up and be a great teammate... and a great competitor. Know that as each of you rise up to the challenge, and look for opportunities to work hard, and push each other, that you will be stronger and will continue to perform better.
We are half way through the season... we have 2 races left before region. Lets make the next 4 weeks the best of the season!
See you Monday,
Coach Jacobs

2010 Varsity Letter Requirements

Team,

I wanted to post the 2010 Varsity letter requirements.

To receive your varsity letter you must:

  • Compete in at least (3) varsity races

or

  • Compete at Region and State in a varsity Position

Also, if you are Senior, and have competed in at least (3) years of Cross Country (and are not a varsity letter) then you would be eligible for a participation letter.

To be a varsity letter at Orem High School, I believe is a great privilege and something to be proud of. This is why I have increased the overall requirements. I feel this is a fair representation of the varsity letter.

we will discuss this in the next team meeting.

thanks,

Coach Andy Jacobs

Pre Region Results -

Team, overall I felt really good about our team and individual performances.

We have a very young girls team, and I anticipate that we will get faster and stronger each and every race. Summer ended up taking 2nd overall, and will have many successful races this year. Congrats to her.
Our top 5 girls beat our top 5 girls from pre region last year by nearly 5:11... thats over a minute faster per girl... and all but one girl that ran it last year, beat their time from 2009.
Boys team finished second overall, and Taylor Charles ran away with the individual win beating his Region performance from 2009.
The Boys top 5 also beat the 2009 team by nearly 1:25... very impressive. Our gap needs to decrease, but with time, I have alot of confidence in the group of boys that we have, and firmly beleive this can happen.
This was a learning race... take a moment and think about how you performed, and what you did well, and what you could have improved on... Is your training where you want it, are you warming up properly, are you mentally focused, and do you beleive in yourself.
Lets have a great race this weekend,
Coach Andy Jacobs

South Fork Time Trial Results

Team,

dispite missing a large portion of our team, I felt that todays results were very strong. On the boys team, Taylor now has the 2nd fastest time and Garrett has the 3rd best time. Summer has the 2nd and 3rd best time... so great job.

The boys top 5 grouping beat 2009, by 7 seconds, and the girls beat the 2009 team by 6:46 that is better than 1:20 a runner... VERY NICE!!!

Also, as an FYI... I have added the time improvements for those of you that ran it last year...

again great job, I am looking forward to this season and what types of improvements each of you can make. We need to focus on building our team spirit, working hard as a team, supporting your teamates, and pushing eachother to become better. If we do that, this should be a really successful season!!!

Cross Country Camp - Tuesday "Real Thing" Update

We have had a great week so far at Camp... the weather has been warm, but not to bad. On Monday we started off the week with the Summit run. It is essentially a long dirt road that just keeps climbing all the way up... and every year is one of the most difficult runs.

on Tuesday, we drove up to Scofield canyon to do the "infamous" Real Thing. This is a timed 4 mile race from coal mine road, to the top of a grueling 3 miles of dirt road and switch backs. The team performed extremely well...

Required Paper work

Team,

Starting this year, each of you must turn in a Physical, and a tryout checklist to the new Athletic office at Orem High School. (Forms are available on the team website under "REQUIRED DOCUMENTS".
There, they will be able to consolidate for all sports making it much easier for the coaches to track as well as the athlete.

I will get a report back showing athletes that have turned in the proper paperwork thus allowing each of you to compete.

For those of you that need to get a physical, next Thursday 29th of July, their will be a Dr. on site at Orem High School at 6 PM. This is a quick and easy way to get it taken care of...

We will discuss this also at practice, but wanted to give you a heads up.

Happy July 4th

Team, we will not be having practice on Monday July 5th. Please plan on running or racing on your own. For those that Race, remember that any race counts as double miles towards your summer mileage goal.

See you on Tuesday.

Summer Mileage Goal

Team,

we have talked about this the last couple practices. I have created a link to the tracking form for each of you to download and print out. This will help you to keep track of your mileage for the summer.

here's how the program will work:

A. The "GOAL": Boys 300 Miles, Girls 250 Miles
B. The "Breakdown": Boys 33.33 Miles Per week(5.5 per day), Girls 27.77 Miles Per Week (4.61 Per Day)
C. Bonus Mileage: Races count as 2x... So if you race a 5K, you would earn 6.2 miles
D. The "Reward": Each person that achieves the goal will receive a summer Mileage shirt... more details to come on that later in the summer.

Please work hard to hit your goal. I believe that each of you can do this. Especially if you are coming to practice and getting in the evening runs when scheduled.

Please let me know if you have any questions,

thanks,

Andy

Alpha Twolve Invitational @ Timpanogas High School

Team, Saturday will be the Alpha Twolve invitational. It will be our 3rd state qualifying meet, and a great opportunity for those competing to improve their season PR's and also to qualify for state.

This meet will be very different from the last meet at Timpanogas. Their will be about a 1/3 the schools, pluse each school is only able to register 5 athletes vs six... So I anticipate the meet to go much quicker ending somewhere around 4:30 or 5:00.

The storm is supposed to hit Friday night and run until early AM Saturday, but from 9:00 AM on, looks to be a sunny and cool day. Temperatures look to be in the High 30's up to mid 40's. Not ideal, but should be fine and hopefully dry.

Kyle in the 100, and Zach in the Long Jump. We need to continue to work hard and as the season moves on, continue to strive for new PR's and more state qualifying marks.

1st Meet of the Year - Are you Ready?

Team,

This week our team will have the opportunity to start out the track season with our first two Track Meets of the year.

On Wednesday, we will be competing against other schools in our Region at Timpanogas High School, and will be a great opportunity for everyone on the team to compete and get valuable meet experience.

On Saturday, we will be back at Timpanogas High School competing in the UHSTCA Coaches invite. This will be the first of 6 state qualifiers qualify for state. I will be able to register up to 6 athletes in each event. So, I should be able to take a fairly large portion of our team.

Every Track Meet is important, because it will gives us the opportunity to test where we are as a team as well as where you stand in relationship to your individual goals. I utilize each meet to make decisions on the next. Including who will compete, who will run in relays, etc... More importantly, I will use our meets this week to determine who will be traveling to St. George with the team for the Pineview invite.

I hope that each of you put your best effort into every chance you have to compete. In addition, I want each of you to represent OHS with the highest respect, regarding how you act, treat each other, as well as those we compete against.

I am excited about this season, and hope you are as well.

Lets have a great year,

Coach Andy Jacobs
