The Varsity Girls team finished 13th Friday out of nearly 40 teams from around Utah (and a couple from Wyoming and Colorado) Summer was our top finisher in 5th Place. All of the girls raced well, giving props to Candace who continues to close the gap between her and summer ( this week was her closest finish only 59 seconds back). Sisters Jordyn and Rachel finished as our 3rd and 4th girls with Rachel earning her Varsity spot back... Angela and Kate continue to be consistent and Montana fell a little short but had a good recovery to finish as our # 7 varsity girl.
On the boys side, we finished 4th out of nearly 50 teams. Taylor finished as our #1 runner. He was in the top 20 (19th Place). Chance and Garrett continue to close the gap between them and Taylor. Kyle, Austin, and Joseph finished together, giving us a 59 second top 5 gap. Our top 6 boys all finished in the top 100 boys and ran very impressive times. Cooper ran his best race of the season to earn a Varsity position for next weeks race. We continue to change out our #7 runner every week. I am really looking to see who is going to step up, close the gap to our first 6, and maintain that position?
I have been thinking a lot about what may or may not be missing on our team. I continue to go back to a quote we used last year during track:
"The Will to win means nothing without the will to prepare".
I believe that most of our team has the will to win, but I am not sure we are at the point where our dedication is where it needs to be. This last week alone, we had a lot of our team skipping practice for various things. We have people coming late to practice, then leaving late and not helping their teammates on runs. We have those that are leaving early and not completing their workouts. I continue to sense an "I" attitude vs a "WE" attitude and we will never achieve what we want to as a team until we change this mentality. There are those of you who are trying and I appreciate it.
We are going to continue to perform very well as a team. But until we can step to the line of a race, and look each other in the eye, and know that as a team we worked hard, pushed each other, encourage each other, and believe in each other to the best of our ability. We will not rise up to our individual and team"potential".
I have a great deal of confidence in each one of you! I believe that we have the talent on this team to rise above and race at a very high level and be a team that others look to as an example.
I want all of you to take pride in being a member of the OHS Cross Country team.
I want all of you to determine what type of legacy you want to leave behind. I want all of you to rise up and be a great teammate... and a great competitor. Know that as each of you rise up to the challenge, and look for opportunities to work hard, and push each other, that you will be stronger and will continue to perform better.
We are half way through the season... we have 2 races left before region. Lets make the next 4 weeks the best of the season!
See you Monday,
Coach Jacobs
